Violation of Social Contracts A Sign of Eroding Society – Pakistan

December 24, 2012

To live in the form of a society all Govt., law and people must enter into a voluntary contract with mutual consent to protect their natural rights and to live together in harmony for a common benefit known as Social Contract.

Though the social contract theory leads to the formation of political authority and the concept of Govt. but here it is beyond the scope of this discussion This Social Contract also leads to the formation of Constitution.

As pointed out earlier, social contract becomes imperative for a society to live in harmony and anyone breaching this contract may be reprimanded by the Government entrusted through social contract by majority of the people by working under the same consented contract. Since, the Social Contract is the fundamental component of the society, any breach of this contract will actually hurt harmony in society and the very existence of society itself. As soon as the minority number of breaches of the social contract increase social fabric of society starts to erode.

In Pakistan, unfortunately this contract is breached by both the entrusted Government and the people.

It is important to note that social contract is agreement between both society and Government. Hence the responsibilities and duties to protect this and preserve the harmony lies on both. Recent scenario created by Dr. Tahir ul Qadri is the epitome of the consequences of breaching the social contract by the Govt. Had the Govt., protected the natural rights to live like, provision of safety, security, food, shelter and basic needs; situation had been different. There would have been no or less intensive pressure on Govt now.

If both parties to this voluntary contract show persistence in their deviated behavior then political, social and moral crimes like killing on sectarian basis, honor killing, terrorism, acid attacks, Karo Kari sieges and marches are no surprises. Anarchy and civil war becomes inevitable.

Pakistan in fact, is eroding as a society and root to this problem lies on breach of social contract. Weaving is no difficult as long as we have positive intentions or at least positive vibes are there. Hoping against hope, like all other crises we as an (OFFnON) came out successfully we’ll come out of it. And I pray.
